Description
The Clay Play wheel bat system with customizable pin holes is designed to allow the potter to throw on a removable bat insert without removing the main body of the bat from the wheel head. This not only gives the potter the ability to produce multiple pieces in a shorter period but saves time on clean up and storage space in the studio.
How to best fit bat and inserts
Drill holes into your main body bat according to your pins specifications on your wheel head. It is best to start with a small hole so that your pins fit snuggly then you can always increase later if you so desire. Once drilled the main body bat will slip on and off your pottery wheel pins and the pin holes will hold the bat firmly to your wheel head.
- If too tight for your preference inserts can also be sized down with a nail file or sandpaper.
- Do be weary that too much side to play may cause stability problems when you are throwing, so reduce the size slowly.
- Pin holes and inserts can be resealed after sanding with a polyurethane varnish if desired but not necessary.
Using a bat system
The main body bat has pin holes pre drilled making it easy and to slip on and off wheel head pins. To use simply fit main body bat to wheel head along with the square insert into the main bat. Throw a pot then wire before removing insert from the main body bat using a flat potter’s tool and placing onto a drying shelf.
How to care for your bat system
When finished using simply wipe bats with a damp sponge to clean and avoid any excessive exposure to water. Store and dry the main body bat with an insert and stack on its side along with the remaining inserts. Over time and use the protective varnish will wear down and moisture absorbed may cause inserts swell, in this case allow to dry completely before using again. If inserts warp, flattened by drying in a stack with heavy weight on them.
